Aircraft warning light types

Light type according to ICAO Regulatory

Light types to be used on the structure stated in part of ICAO Annex 14 (Airports) Chapter 6 - Visual Aids for denothing obstacles .

LIGHT TYPES

The main distinctions of the light types for the ICAO regulations are light intensity, the beam pattern and light colors.

Terms for ctagorization of aircraft warning lights are candela for light intensity, for beam pattern flashing mode or blink type and constantly (steady mode), for light colors are as white and red.

Lights are divided into three main categories according to these features:

1. Low Intensity Aircraft Warning Lights

Low-intensity aircraft warning lights light intensity is upper than 10 candela. These lights are used at constructions down to 45 meter heights. Lights burns only at night time. All types of this lights are steady mode.

Low-intensity aircraft warning light is categorized at two types.

• Type A: The minimum light intensity is 10 candela, color is red and it burns as steady mode only night time.
• Type B: The minimum light intensity is 32 candela, color is red and it burns as steady mode only night time.

2. Medium Intensity Aircraft Warning Lights

Medium intensity aircraft warning lights light intensity is upper than 2000 candela. These lights are used at constructions up to 45 meter heights from the ground. Lights burns both night and day.

Medium intensity aircraft warning light is categorized at four types.

• Type A: The minimum light intensity for day time is 20.000 candela, for night time 2.000 candela, color is white and it burns at flashing mode both day and night time with 20-60 fpm options. This light types are used at both day and night time warning systems.

• Type B: The minimum light intensity for night time is 2000 candela, color is red and it burns at flashing mode at night time with 20-60 fpm options. This light types are used at night time warning systems.

• Type AB: The minimum light intensity for day time is 20.000 candela, for night time 2.000 candela. Color is white for day time and red for night time. It burns at flashing mode both day and night time with 20-60 fpm options. This light types are used at both day and night warning systems.

• Tip C: The minimum light intensity for night time is 2.000 candela, color is red and it burns at steady mode at night time with 20-60 fpm options. This light types are used at night time warning systems

3. High Intensity Aircraft Warning Lights

High intensity aircraft warning lights are used at non- marked structure upper than 105 mt height and marked/non marked upper than 150 meters above ground.
This light types burns with different light intensities at day, twilight and night time.

High intensity aircraft warning lights are widely defined in two main types.

• Type A: The minimum light intensity for day time is 200.000 candela, for twilight 20.000 candela, for night time 2.000 candela. Color is white for day, twighlight and night time. It burns at flashing mode at day, twilight and ight time with 20-60 fpm options. This light types are used at 24 hours warning systems.
• Type B: The minimum light intensity for day time is 100.000 candela, for twilight 20.000 candela, for night time 2.000 candela. Color is white for day, twighlight and night time. It burns at flashing mode at day, twighlight and night time with 20-60 fpm options. This light types are used at 24 hours warning systems.

According to the type of project high intensity aircraft warning lights can be designed as in the daytime and twilight white flashing, for the night time; Red flashing or steady mode red burning.

• Type AB:
White flashing at day and twilight time, red flashing burning at night time.
• Type AC: White flashing at day and twilight time, red steady burning at night time.
